Frequency of coeliac disease in Asians

Researchers from the Department of Gastroenterology at the Royal Derby Hospital, Derby, have conducted an audit of coeliac disease in Asians living in a well-defined area in the UK in southern Derbyshire.

Of 1305 people with biopsy-confirmed coeliac disease, diagnosed between 1958 and 2008, 82 are Asian. Population data from the office of national statistics showed that coeliac disease occurred significantly more frequently in Asians, than in white people, especially in Asian women between 16 and 60. No Asian men over 65 were diagnosed, indicating that more efforts be made towards diagnosing coeliac disease in this group. Asian coeliacs are more likely to present with anaemia than with diarrhoea, and less likely to follow a strict gluten free diet. Strategies must be developed to help Asians adhere to a gluten-free diet.
